  • Greetings from... Bogotá
With a population of seven million people, Bogotá DC is the fourth largest city in South America and the capital of Colombia. The joys and nuisances of the country are present here in full force and amplified form. In the case of Colombia, there are quite a few of them.
    ArchiNed.nl – news
First of all, Colombia is a festive country. No matter where you order a drink or a juice, it’ll always be served with a straw – even in expensive restaurants and even as a handy stirring implement with tea or coffee. What’s more, a daily dose of Sal…

  • ‘It makes a difference to make art’
Artist Olafur Eliasson gave a wonderful lecture in front of a packed auditorium at the NAi on Tuesday evening, March 5, 2007. Luckily, he didn’t talk about the announced theme – ‘structure’ as one of the seven pillars of architecture – but he did talk about his work and, especially, the ideas behind it.
    ArchiNed.nl – news
There is something about this artist from Berlin. His best-known work, the Weather Project at the Tate Modern – a shining sun that was occasionally obscured by mist – was repeatedly shown by various speakers during the Projective Landsc…

  • Design for coals
Just a two-hour drive from Rotterdam is the Ruhrgebiet landscape and culture park, whose main attraction is Zollverein in Essen. With the completion of OMA’s conversion of the Coal Refinery and SANAA's new Zollverein School, the transformation of this former industrial site is starting to take shape.
    ArchiNed.nl – news
When the smelly and unhealthy mining industry disappeared from the Ruhrgebiet in the 1980s, the region was left to deal with heavily polluted land and high unemployment. The Internationale Bauaustelling (IBA) Emscher Park, which started in 1989, put …

  • Casa da Música Porto by OMA
For many years, new noticeable objects in the urban landscape of Porto have been ruled by consumerism, with shopping malls and speculative housing complexes, and by the established codes of the Porto School, with Álvaro Siza as the foreman. The new millennium starts with Koolhaas' appearance shaking things up.
    ArchiNed.nl – news
A diamond-shaped white concrete Casa da Música [CdM] slowly emerged in the most central roundabout of the local modern urbanity. From the very beginning, the process was politically and urban disturbed. This fact placed its construction, archite…

  • Plans for a New Stedelijk Museum
A very preliminary design proposal. A pre-sketch design. The vision of the architect. That was the type of language used yesterday at the media presentation to describe the winning design by Benthem Crouwel Architecten for the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam.
    ArchiNed.nl – news

  • Casa da Musica, Porto
The ‘Casa da Musica’ by OMA was to have been the architectural icon for Porto, European Cultural Capital in 2001. But protracted work on the foundations and unforeseen weather conditions delayed completion of the building. In contrast to the Palace of the Soviets in the 1930s, when similar conditions transformed a communist icon into an enormous swimming pool, Porto persevered in its pursuit of ‘Glokoolhaasination’. Work on Casa da Musica will finish in July 2004. A report on the project.
    ArchiNed.nl – news
Situated next to Boavista Plaza, one of Porto's busiest roundabouts, Casa da Musica is almost invisible despite its strong formal expression. This is caused in part by the trees on the roundabout, from where the building is best viewed. And it is par…

  • Amsterdam's Western Garden Suburbs again a testing ground for Dutch Urban Planning
West of the A10 motorway in Amsterdam lie the Western Garden Suburbs, laid out according to the General Expansion Plan (AUP) of 1928. What is remarkable about the AUP is that it determined how Amsterdam was to develop and was implemented almost exactly as planned. Does the current renewal of the Western Garden Suburbs form a continuation of or break with the original intentions?
    ArchiNed.nl – news
The Western Garden Suburbs are characterised by broad avenues, waterways, open space, and dwellings in green surroundings. Tall blocks of flats, dwellings with shared entrance halls and stairways, and houses with gardens predominate. Open building bl…
