  • More for less: An optimistic strategy of renewal in sombre times
The publication PLUS: Large Scale Housing Development - an Exceptional Case makes a convincing argument for the renewal of big housing complexes in France. In the Dutch situation the PLUS strategy can complement the current, one-sided discussion on the renewal of the post-war city.

In their practice, the three authors – French architects Frédéric Druot, Anne Lacaton and Jean-Philippe Vassal – work on making careful and continuous changes to the existing city. To them, total demolition followed by new constr…

    ArchiNed.nl – news

  • Garden Shed as Architectural Assignment
Located on the fringes of all large towns in the Netherlands are allotment gardens containing small plots where people have a shed or summerhouse and where they grow flowers and vegetables in a park setting. Many people move into their house early in the summer season and only move out when the season draws to a close.

  • Tati at the Nai
Think of Tati and the film Mon Oncle springs to mind, and think of that film and Villa Arpel will appear, the show-box home of Monsieur Arpel. The exhibition Tatirama at the NAi looks at the role of architecture in the films of French filmmaker Jacques Tati.
    ArchiNed.nl – news
With films like Mon Oncle (1958) and Playtime (1967), Jacques Tati (1907-1982) made a significant contribution to that small but celebrated group of films in which architecture plays a prominent role; other leading works are Metrop…

  • MVRDV's New Autumn Collection
Hagen Island is a residential area designed by MVRDV in the new suburb of Ypenburg just outside The Hague. The housing looks hip, as if it was made for a film. Amidst the endless sea of new dwellings stretching out from The Hague, the layout here seems innovative. So plenty of reason to take a look behind the scenes at life on the set of this film.
    ArchiNed.nl – news
The houses huddle stiffly, like a colony of migratory birds, on the muddy flats under a stark autumn sky. A wonderful sight, the perfect setting for a film by Alex van Warmerdam (director of de Noorderlingen, een halve eeuw later). A…

  • The Embodiment of a Study
Bye House (Wall House 2) was designed in the early 1970's by John Hejduk for a site in Connecticut, USA, but was never built. Ten years ago the town of Groningen, in the north of the Netherlands, undertook to build this famous house on a lakeside site on the town's outskirts. Early in September, one year after Hejduk's death, the house was completed.

  • 25 years of Oase
Architecture journal Oase celebrated its 25th birthday with a special issue entitled 25 Years of Critical Reflection on Architecture and a debate of the same name on a sunny Tuesday afternoon in the NAi lecture theatre.

  • Shopping on the trash heap
Trash is the inevitable result of mass consumption. Every stage in the journey from raw material to discarded product results in waste material. 2012 Architecten salvages construction material from this flow of waste. Recyclicity.net, its digital construction catalogue, aims to encourage designers to use this hidden flow of material.
    ArchiNed.nl – news
Besides developing a catalogue of materials, soon available on internet, 2012 engages in research and production. The interior of Duchi shoe shop is composed for 90% of waste. But it doesn't look the least bit shabby: floors, wa…

  • Venice Bienniale - Preview
This summer - from June through to November 2000 - the new Architecture Biennale will be held in Venice. The Biennale offers an overview of what is current in the world of architecture (and related work in visual art) in the participating countries. The scenario for this year's event was drawn up by the Italian Massimiliano Fuksas, the flamboyant and - in Italy - not uncontroversial architect. Ahead of the opening, those interested can gain a preview on the Internet, where a rapidly growing exhibition of participants' work is in the making.

Fuksas has built the forthcoming Biennale around the theme 'Cities': the city as context characterised by permanent crisis. According to Fuksas, architects cannot be permitted to adopt a cynical attitude towards the city - th…

  • 25 Informal kiloVolts
Situated in the Lloyds harbour area of Rotterdam, this multi-company building for businesses and artists active in the media sector, designed by architect and Archined colleague Robert Winkel, is now almost complete. The staff at Archined have witnessed at close hand the ups and downs of the design and construction process of this '25kV building' as it is known. And we're just as proud as Robert, not to mention somewhat astonished, that the original, radical concept - a completely transparent facade containing glazed toilets and glazed kitchenettes - has survived unscathed through the jungle of officialdom and regulations.
    ArchiNed.nl – news
The 25kV building is a former electricity control station, now renovated to house workspaces for (new) media companies and visual artists working with new media. The original building was little more than a blank concrete volume wit…
