  • The envelope revisited
For Alejandro Zaera Polo the building volume – the envelope – is currently the most relevant element of architecture because it best expresses the link between technology, representation and politics.
    ArchiNed.nl – news
While the lecture that Alejandro Zaera Polo held in April 2008 essentially signalled the start of his examination of the relation between building volume and politics, he is now working on a general theory about The Envelope. November 25 he gave anot…

  • Venice (2) the national pavilions
Out There: Architecture Beyond Building is the motto of the 11th Venice Architecture Biennale. The national pavilions also make their contribution to this theme, which can be taken in a socially engaged or a more abstract and conceptual direction. Here are some striking pavilions selected by the ArchiNed editors.

  • Dynamic Colour-Space
A section of the Groninger Museum is devoted to the exhibition ‘P. Struycken: Digital Paradise’. Peter Struycken is present everywhere – in the exhibited work and in the interior. Famed for his way of working with colour, structure and form, the artist became interested in interdisciplinary collaboration at an early stage. In 1994 and 1999 he was commissioned by former director Frans Haks to design colour palettes for the interior of the new Groninger Museum building.
    ArchiNed.nl – news
After studying at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague from 1956 to 1961, Peter Struycken (1939) painted in a figurative style. He was fascinated by the differences and similarities in visual reality. A row of trees interested him more than a single…

  • Noodles versus Magnum
Researcher and designer Ekim Tan from Istanbul, currently living in Rotterdam and developing her doctorate research proposal at Delft University of Technology, kept a diary of her visit to the International Forum on Urbanism in Beijing in October.
    ArchiNed.nl – news
Tuesday October 17‘Noodles or Magnum?’ What a choice I think half sleepily as I hear the stewardess in the distance. Slurping my noodles, I’m impressed by the seemingly endless cinnamon coloured Gobi Desert down below. Having stu…

  • Buenos Aires Diary
Argentina is about to industrialise the process of waste-disposal treatment. The problem of waste disposal is being tackled ambitiously, and the aim is 0% waste in 2017! In March Caro Isern, Iris de Kievith and Jan Jongert organised the ‘reciclan’ workshop. Together with Argentinean designers and waste specialists, they looked for ways to turn common local waste products into building materials.

  • Kempe and Thill dispel the myth
On Friday October 28 the Rotterdam Maaskant Prize for Young Architects 2005 was presented to Oliver Thill, one of the two architects who head up the Rotterdam-based ‘expat’ office Atelier Kempe Thill. In this interview they dispel the myth that the Netherlands offers a favourable climate for young architects.
    ArchiNed.nl – news
‘André was born in 1968, I in 1971 – that’s why.’ This is prize-winner Oliver Thill’s laconic reply to the suggestion that statutory reasons alone meant that the Maaskant Prize was awarded to him personally – winners must be aged 35 years or younger …

  • New-generation motorway architecture
The Utrecht architecture café organised an excursion on June 4 to two of the city's most prominent new projects: the motorway buildings by Kas Oosterhuis and Fons Verheijen in Leidsche Rijn.
    ArchiNed.nl – news
My drive to Utrecht last Saturday took me along the A12 motorway. Strewn thoughtlessly along both sides of the roadway were miserable-looking boxes decorated with signage that clamoured for attention, interrupted occasionally by stretches of acoustic…

  • Big Windows in Porto
Acoustic specialist Renz van Luxemburg was closely involved in the design of the Casa da Música by OMA in Porto. Two spectacular big windows connect the concert hall with the city outside. What did it all involve? Jeroen Mensink interviewed Van Luxemburg.

  • False Flat
Published this August was the book False Flat. Why Dutch Design is So Good by Aaron Betsky and Adam Eeuwens. A book as a book is meant to be, says design connoisseur Timo de Rijk.
    ArchiNed.nl – news

  • Tune in & Turn on
Is Luc Deleu a realist, idealist or visionary? To be honest, it's a question I'd prefer not to answer. After seeing the exhibition Values in Antwerp's MUHKA, I'm occupied by just one question. What purpose is served by the work of Luc 'Self-Power Man' Deleu, the self-appointed orbanist?
    ArchiNed.nl – news
Orbanism is the open concept employed by Luc Deleu. »Orbanism stands for a metaphysical and material structuring of the world for the common good, the public interest. Orbanism aims for a dynamic balance between order and chaos, architecture and life…

  • Holiday Living
Until the end of September a small site on the edge of Leidsche Rijn has been turned into a settlement of alternative, transportable, flexible 'dwellings' grouped under the name Parasite Paradise. On show is much of what has been designed in this field in recent years. An opportunity not to miss!
    ArchiNed.nl – news
Now that it's the holiday season, a large portion of the population voluntarily resides in conditions that fall well short of standards that normally apply to housing. Crammed together in minimal, poorly isolated 'dwellings' of cotton or thin plastic…
