  • What Ole Bouman Wants
Since April 1, 2007, former editor-in-chief of Archis/Volume Ole Bouman (1960) is the new director of the Netherlands Architecture Institute. Bouman sees the NAi as a medium that, in addition to its regular tasks, can raise issues that will also give architecture its relevance and legitimacy in the long term.
    ArchiNed.nl – news
Architecture is not only a profession but also a window on the world, and it can be deployed as an instrument to effect social change. It’s a message you’ve been spreading for years in lectures, though activities such as t…

  • The city a school
A place in which to make contact, negotiate and sharpen points of view. That’s how Herman Hertzberger sees the city. And that’s how he wants the countless schools he designed to function. The exhibition Hertzberger’s Amsterdam, organised by ARCAM architecture centre to mark his 75th birthday displays a number of them.
    ArchiNed.nl – news
Hertzberger is renowned for the way he shaped, and continues to shape, a new and less traditional system of education that has evolved since the 1970s thanks to the influence of Maria Montessori and others. His schools do not emphasis…

  • Brussel, Marx & PepsiCo
‘Europe’ turned 50 last weekend: perfect timing. The public presentation of ‘A Vision for Brussels / Brussels Capital of Europe’ by the Rotterdam-based Berlage Institute coincided nicely with the festivities marking the anniversary of the Treaty of Rome. A few thoughts on a mediagenic manifesto in the form of a book and an exhibition.

Fanfare, pomp and circumstance surrounded the opening of the public display of ‘Brussels Capital of Europe’ – a studio project now well over two years old – at the Centre for Fine Arts (BOZAR) in Brussels on Marc…

  • View of the Road
The car windscreen offers a window on the world in 'World Avenue', the central exhibition of the Architecture Biennale Rotterdam. The main gallery of the NAi has been converted into a drive-in cinema for the occasion, with nine screens on rotating stages showing video footage of motorways in nine world cities.
    ArchiNed.nl – news
Parked in front of each screen in the exhibition is a model of the most commonly driven car in the city that features on that particular screen. Visitors sit into the cars and film footage transports them along roadways through the nine…

  • Expo 2000 - NL
On June 1 next, the EXPO 2000 world exhibition opens in Hanover. The NL pavilion designed by MVRDV is in many senses the highlight of the enormous exhibition grounds. ArchiNed will be providing coverage in a number of News Reports. First subject: the NL pavilion.
    ArchiNed.nl – news
Dutch pride was much in evidence during the international press preview on Thursday last week. Rumours that the NL pavilion will be the biggest hit at this EXPO are not exaggerated; that the Dutch contribution to the EXPO will go un…

  • Venice Bienniale - Preview
This summer - from June through to November 2000 - the new Architecture Biennale will be held in Venice. The Biennale offers an overview of what is current in the world of architecture (and related work in visual art) in the participating countries. The scenario for this year's event was drawn up by the Italian Massimiliano Fuksas, the flamboyant and - in Italy - not uncontroversial architect. Ahead of the opening, those interested can gain a preview on the Internet, where a rapidly growing exhibition of participants' work is in the making.
    ArchiNed.nl – news
Fuksas has built the forthcoming Biennale around the theme 'Cities': the city as context characterised by permanent crisis. According to Fuksas, architects cannot be permitted to adopt a cynical attitude towards the city - th…
