  • OMA/Paradox I
The exhibition OMA/Progress runs until February 2012 at the Barbican Centre in London, a major retrospective which aims to be something else. The exhibition coincides with the opening of the first two buildings by OMA in Britain: the head office of N.M. Rothschild & Sons in the City of London, and Maggie’s Centre in Glasgow. Both the exhibition and the two buildings have been very well received by the British media, no doubt to the satisfaction of Koolhaas after forty years of effort here in London.
    ArchiNed.nl – news

In an interview with The Guardian to coincide with the exhibition, Rem Koolhaas was asked how OMA had managed to maintain its critical position over the years. To which he answered: 'I am a criticism machine myself, a…

  • A spirited threesome
deSingel in Antwerp is presenting the work of Architects De Vylder Vinck Taillieu. This powerful exhibition oscillates between Wunderkammer and declaration of intent. Instead of displaying, the exhibition questions construction: essential viewing therefore for architects, and a fascinating pinball machine for all others.

  • Struggle for self-development
Miguel Fisac's best-known building may be demolished, but it still provokes discussion. However, the documentary ‘The Freaky Story of the Funky Skyscraper’ by Andrés Rubio is not only about the Spanish architect Fisac and this building, but also about his generation during the Franco regime.

Heavy excavators fitted with steel claws eat their way slowly but imperturbably through the final chunks of concrete of a curious tower. Local architects have gathered to collect pieces of rubble as souvenirs, and to express their…

  • Architecture or your life
The exhibition ‘Double or Nothing’ in Bozar (Brussels) presents the work of Belgian office 51N4E. In his opening lecture Peter Swinnen offered the architectural public insight into the business ethics of this successful design firm.
    ArchiNed.nl – news

The work of 51N4E raises questions. Architectural theoreticians are racking their brains about whether their work is anecdotal or singular.* It would deny all history and refuse to adopt any position. This confusion in the r…

  • Reconstruction – why not!?
Reconstructing a building with new materials is at odds with one of the most important principles of modern western building conservation, namely the preservation of a physical object in its original materials as a historical source. That is why reconstruction is so controversial within heritage circles and elsewhere. During the Docomomo seminar a number of speakers discussed the theme of reconstructing modern heritage in a session entitled Reco.mo.mo. How real is imitation, how beloved is the original?

The session kicked off with Professor Marieke Kuipers. The discussion about reconstruction has been taking place for decades but is rarely conducted in public. According to Kuipers there is scarcely any debate about the fun…

  • Architects meet one another in Selinunte: visions for the immediate future
This spring various generations of architects from all over the world met one another in Selinunte, Sicily. Among them were budding talents who have just completed their first projects in their native regions, and architects from firms that operate globally. The nice thing about the gathering was that all the invited offices presented their work, which gave everyone a clear idea of the scope of work of architects and in particular of the motives underpinning their work.

Especially among the younger offices it was evident that ambitions have clearly changed. Or perhaps it is more accurate to speak of a new mentality. These offices seem less concerned with the spectacular or new effects of the…

  • About an office that doesn’t want to build
The very first pictures of the earth taken from outer space changed the way I look and think forever. The earth is our spacecraft, our mother, and home to all of us. (Luc Deleu, 2011)

  • NEXT Architects: searching to balance city and countryside
The ten projects that Marijn Schenk of NEXT Architects raced through during his lecture at the Groningen Academy of Architecture covered the various areas in which the office is active: design and research projects in the field of interior, architecture, urbanism and infrastructure alternated with one another. If a common thread could be discerned, it was an interest in mobility and urban development.
    ArchiNed.nl – news

At the start of his lecture Schenk quoted the British architect and writer Cedric Price (1934-2003). Price described the changing morphology of the city in terms of ways to prepare an egg. In the pre-industrial era the city was a rec…

There is a lot of unoccupied office space, and in Rotterdam they want to attract more residents into the city. So what could be more logical than converting empty offices into homes?

  • Remote control for the city
In a few years we will all navigate our way through the city with a smartphone. The Amsterdam version of the mobile architecture application from the Netherlands Architecture Institute (NAi) leaves you in no doubt about that, despite the teething troubles and its limited possibilities. Soon you will be able to zap your way through the city using your telephone as a remote control device. But can this technology enhance the contact between people and their surroundings and, in the process, enhance the quality of the built environment?

  • Necessity or convention? – West Arch at the Ludwig Forum
The exhibition West Arch: A New Generation in Architecture has just ended. On show was the architecture of a self-conscious new generation, flourishing amidst the art of Richter, Warhol and Ai Weiwei. Not much sweet talking here; instead, a thirst for action sets the tone.
    ArchiNed.nl – news

The green, star-shaped urinal blocks of the toilets at the Ludwig Forum in Aachen may have been just a coincidence, but they are very appropriate for what is happening one floor above. For the ground floor is the scene of a changing of…
