  • Frank Gehry’s Software Keeps Buildings on Budget
The New York Times – news
When Bruce Ratner hired Frank Gehry in 2004 to design a wrinkled-looking 76-story residential skyscraper in Manhattan near the Brooklyn Bridge, the market for eye-popping luxury condominiums was booming, and the world-class architec…

  • Greetings from... Berlin
One persistent illusion about Berlin is that it’s a city full of wonderful and interesting architecture. The ostentatious Potsdamer Platz may attract over 100,000 visitors a day, but you won’t find any appealing architecture there. Various dictators and dictatorships succeeded in leaving their mark on the city, and so experimentation is now shunned.

So don’t expect any architectural experiments in Berlin, except for the Dutch Embassy by OMA and the Jewish Museum by Daniel Libeskind. What you will find is tidy, straightforward development that respects the building lines. …

  • Merchant mentality in The Promised Land
Where do you start when you’re commissioned to design a new city in Asia or Russia? How do you deal with cultural differences, regulations and language? These questions formed the starting point for an evening programme organised by the International New Town Institute to examine urban development in Asia.

  • Neurath’s open-source urbanism
Stroom De Haag recently staged an exhibition on the work of Austrian economist, sociologist and philosopher Otto Neurath (1882-1945) entitled After Neurath – The Language of the Global Polis. Under the motto ‘better late than never’, here follows an introduction to the grandfather of open-sources.

After Neurath is an event that seems to grow as spontaneously as the urban development envisaged by Neurath. For two years now – one year longer than planned – Stroom has been programming activities about this idealist. I visited th…

  • Charles Jencks, Strange Attractor
After the lecture by Charles Jencks, delivered at the NAi Maastricht on March 13, a former student of Delft University of Technology asked me if a snapshot was taken of Jencks. 'He is an icon', she continued. 'Twenty years ago it was all theory, and look what he does now!'

In this article, I try to take seriously Jencks’s remark that culture should find an iconographic language to connect us to the universe. Jencks’s lectures, answers and gardens seem to resemble the cosmos when it comes to beginnin…
  • Hi-Ha-Happening
Museum Night marked the opening of the installation/event Happening at the NAi. Is it back to the 1960s for the NAi? In one sense, perhaps. It’s certainly an attempt to break with the traditional exhibition. Activities, experiences and audience participation now set the tone.

  • Urban Politics Now: Re-Imagining Democracy in the Neoliberal City
Psychoanalysis considers the Symptom – slips of the tongue, nervous ticks, dreams and suchlike – as a repressed form of speech; like a liar with sweaty palms, we’d rather keep something to ourselves, but just can’t help it. Symptoms are useful to the analyst, as an immediate surfacing of the Real, of the traumatic, uncontrollable issues that really motivate us – libido, the longing for recognition, fear of the Other, and so on. By carefully interpreting symptoms, the analyst can assess the pathology of a patient.

These days it’s a commonplace to consider the design of our built environment in such pathological terms: The content of our cities is increasingly determined by apparently traumatic, uncontrollable motivations (includ…

  • Revitalising Modernist Heritage
One hundred modernistic structures in the Netherlands were designated as monuments last year. But what should we do with this modern heritage? On December 15, 2007, the symposium Forward! On the Revitalisation of Modern Architecture took place at the SMART Project Space in Amsterdam. Major differences of opinion emerged between architects, theorists and artists on the significance and value of modernism. Artists in particular offered interesting suggestions for revitalising modernist heritage.
