  • The envelope revisited
For Alejandro Zaera Polo the building volume – the envelope – is currently the most relevant element of architecture because it best expresses the link between technology, representation and politics.
    ArchiNed.nl – news
While the lecture that Alejandro Zaera Polo held in April 2008 essentially signalled the start of his examination of the relation between building volume and politics, he is now working on a general theory about The Envelope. N…

  • More for less: An optimistic strategy of renewal in sombre times
The publication PLUS: Large Scale Housing Development - an Exceptional Case makes a convincing argument for the renewal of big housing complexes in France. In the Dutch situation the PLUS strategy can complement the current, one-sided discussion on the renewal of the post-war city.

  • Radial Views
From March 13 to May 25 deSingel in Antwerp hosted an exhibition of work by interior and landscape architect Petra Blaisse entitled Radial Views. But ‘exhibition’ is perhaps not quite the right word. Blaisse wrote a scenario for this Belgian art campus and made a number of subtle interventions. Rooted to its context, her work is difficult to exhibit.

According to the website the exhibition was to open at 1 o’clock. I arrived 20 minutes early and wandered around the building. Suddenly I noticed an open door that led to the inner garden of the art campus. I looked around, saw no-on…

  • Architecture and Happiness
Car drivers who don’t read traffic signs but find their way with the help of points of recognition and buildings along the roadside will have to be extra careful from April 4 onwards. That’s when the Revolving House starts turning on the Hasselt roundabout in Tilburg. The idea for this house that revolves with the traffic comes from John Körmeling, who will also build the Dutch pavilion for the Expo 2010 in Shanghai.

Tilburg is another town with ambitious plans to present itself as a place of culture, and so it asked Körmeling to make a work of art. As an ode to the terrace house with through living room, the Eindhoven architect came up with a versi…

  • Revitalising Modernist Heritage
One hundred modernistic structures in the Netherlands were designated as monuments last year. But what should we do with this modern heritage? On December 15, 2007, the symposium Forward! On the Revitalisation of Modern Architecture took place at the SMART Project Space in Amsterdam. Major differences of opinion emerged between architects, theorists and artists on the significance and value of modernism. Artists in particular offered interesting suggestions for revitalising modernist heritage.

  • Dynamic Colour-Space
A section of the Groninger Museum is devoted to the exhibition ‘P. Struycken: Digital Paradise’. Peter Struycken is present everywhere – in the exhibited work and in the interior. Famed for his way of working with colour, structure and form, the artist became interested in interdisciplinary collaboration at an early stage. In 1994 and 1999 he was commissioned by former director Frans Haks to design colour palettes for the interior of the new Groninger Museum building.

  • Optical Spectacle
The Ciné-bal that Theo van Doesburg designed for the Aubette leisure centre in Strasbourg in 1926 was way ahead of its time. The hall not only offered space for various forms of entertainment such as dancing, dining, films and music but also created a fitting atmosphere. Van Doesburg deployed colour in particular to enhance the mood because ‘without colour, architecture lacks expression and is blind’. The colours practically jump off the pages of the original design drawings for the Ciné-bal and the Salle des Fêtes, now on show at the NAi along with a number of historical photos and scale models.

  • Casa da Música Porto by OMA
For many years, new noticeable objects in the urban landscape of Porto have been ruled by consumerism, with shopping malls and speculative housing complexes, and by the established codes of the Porto School, with Álvaro Siza as the foreman. The new millennium starts with Koolhaas' appearance shaking things up.

  • More Sign Than Space, Las Vegas Revisited
'I am not and never have been a post modernist. This is a misunderstanding.” Robert Venturi and his wife Denise Scott Brown visited the Netherlands to promote their latest book ‘Architecture as Signs and Systems’. At the TU Delft they gave a lecture to a large audience and held a seminar with Ph.D. students. At the Netherlands Architecture Institute they were interviewed by Harm Tilman (editor in chief of 'de Architect’) in front of a sold out crowd and had a debate with the Dutch architects Sjoerd Soeters (Soeters Van Eldonk Ponec architecten), Liesbeth van der Pol (Atelier Zeinstra van der Pol), and Haiko Meijer (Onix).
