  • Venice (3): Architecture without Building?
Entitled Out There: Architecture Beyond Building, the 11th Venice Architecture Biennale aims to give new meaning to what we call architecture. ‘Architecture is not building,’ writes director Aaron Betsky in an essay, ‘Buildings are objects and the act of building leads to such objects, but architecture is something else.’
    ArchiNed.nl – news
Architecture must do more than provide shelter for us. Architecture must offer us a secure home in the confusing modern reality. With this biennale Aaron Betsky wants to stimulate experiments and show how we can establish (new) relationships between …

On March 11, as part of the series of public lectures on sustainability organised by Rotterdam Academy of Architecture, Paul de Ruiter presented a number of sustainable projects by his office to an audience of architects and students. Architectenbureau Paul de Ruiter has been working on sustainability since 1994.

  • Charles Jencks, Strange Attractor
After the lecture by Charles Jencks, delivered at the NAi Maastricht on March 13, a former student of Delft University of Technology asked me if a snapshot was taken of Jencks. 'He is an icon', she continued. 'Twenty years ago it was all theory, and look what he does now!'
    ArchiNed.nl – news
In this article, I try to take seriously Jencks’s remark that culture should find an iconographic language to connect us to the universe. Jencks’s lectures, answers and gardens seem to resemble the cosmos when it comes to beginnings, centres and ends…

  • A Genuine Greg Lynn in Amsterdam South-East?
Friday June 15 saw the opening of an exhibition of submissions to the limited competition for the honeycomb apartment building Kleiburg. Three artists and three architects were set the task of giving Kleiburg a facelift. Remarkably, the three artists turned out to have submitted typically architectural projects, and the architects produced art. American architect Greg Lynn (1964) made the best plan and will receive a further commission to translate his ideas into a feasible plan.
    ArchiNed.nl – news
Kleiburg is a typical Bijlmer block from the early 1970s with 500 rental dwellings on ten floors. The block is located in what is known as the Bijlmer Museum, where the blocks and surrounding space will preserve their original form and where the spir…

  • Who’s afraid of black and red, who’s (afraid of) Odile Decq?
Why Odile Decq in the Brakke Grond? Out of curiosity. No exhaustive argumentation is needed to invite an architect, according to host Maarten Kloos. But a minor anecdote reveals that his wife read an interview with Decq in the Alitalia magazine and suggested inviting her. And so it came to pass that Decq performed in ARCAM’s theatrical lecture series on February 6.
    ArchiNed.nl – news
Born in Bretagne and still living by the sea with a view of an endless horizon, Odile Decq states that: ‘Architecture is about travelling. The horizon is a line you want to reach. You never succeed, but you’re always on the move. You wa…
