Moshe Safdie and Associates Emery Roth and Sons, P.C., associated architects The Columbus Center project, a winning proposal for the redevelopment of the New York Coliseum site, represents one of the largest undertakings of Moshe Safdie's professional career. Situated on a four acre parcel on Columbus Circle, the complex consists of twin-towers surrounding a garden atrium and a Great Galleria which follows the curved street edge of Columbus Circle. The design program included office and residential space, a major hotel, an extensive three-level retail gallery center, and 12 cinemas. Bid documents had been completed in detail, and construction was expected to begin in the Fall of 1987, but the project was suspended in 1988 when one of the developing partners withdrew from the project before construction began.
