The palace and gardens at Versailles in northern France are famous for their beauty and lavish detail. Nearly 101 hectares (nearly 250 acres) of meticulously sculpted gardens surround the massive baroque palace. Construction on the ornate palace began in 1661, under King Louis XIV's direction. The building, which has more than 1300 rooms, took 40 years to complete and was the royal residence until France's 1789 revolution.
