  • TEAMWORK – Coastal zone in Almere Poort
Adri Duivesteijn, alderman for physical planning and housing, opened the exhibition TEAMWORK in Museum De Paviljoens in Almere on October 31. It’s called ‘teamwork’ because the local authority invited three property developers to present proposals for the development of the Coastal Zone in Almere Poort, and because Museum De Paviljoens set three teams of artists to work with the same programme.

My drive to Utrecht last Saturday took me along the A12 motorway. Strewn thoughtlessly along both sides of the roadway were miserable-looking boxes decorated with signage that clamoured for attention, interrupted occasionally by …

  • Soeters in the Wrong
The Prix de Rome architecture competition reached its conclusion last Thursday as the candidates in the final round presented their projects to the public. The presentation was to have been followed by a discussion with academics and developers intended to shed light on the relationship between architecture and entertainment. As it turned out, events took a different course. Architect Sjoerd Soeters expressed his agitation with the Prix de Rome design assignment and, in the process, roundly attacked the entire Dutch architecture education system.

The Prix de Rome organisers set a trendy, contemporary assignment for the final round: to convert the vacant CSM factory in Halfweg into a multifunctional events complex. The designers not only had to come up with an architectur…

  • Cosmic and Theatrical
Hendrik Wijdeveld is presented as a man of the cosmos in the exhibition 'Plan The Impossible' at the NAi. He was an isolated romantic who opposed the city as a machine for production and consumption and who returned to elementary systems found in the universe and in nature. An agreeable subject, since it's wonderful to see how chaos is eliminated with simple models and all-in-one diagrams.
