    M8 IN CHINA
    exhibition

  • Greetings from... Berlin
One persistent illusion about Berlin is that it’s a city full of wonderful and interesting architecture. The ostentatious Potsdamer Platz may attract over 100,000 visitors a day, but you won’t find any appealing architecture there. Various dictators and dictatorships succeeded in leaving their mark on the city, and so experimentation is now shunned.
    ArchiNed.nl – news
So don’t expect any architectural experiments in Berlin, except for the Dutch Embassy by OMA and the Jewish Museum by Daniel Libeskind. What you will find is tidy, straightforward development that respects the building lines. Luckily there are plenty…

  • Innovative hotel chain examined
A new hotel is rising rapidly right next to the departure hall at Schiphol Airport. Luxury, just like all the other hotels at Schiphol, but without the exorbitant room-rate demanded by most other hotels in the area. What’s the secret behind the new Citizen M hotel chain? A team from Booosting examined the innovative construction method of this hotel.
    ArchiNed.nl – news
Small rooms with a lot of luxury: that’s the formula behind Citizen M. »If you’re in town for a short stay, then you certainly don’t want a big luxury room with all the extras«, argues Jeroen Vester of Amsterdam design firm Concrete, ‘but the alterna…

  • Destination: Paradise
NAi director Ole Bouman introduced his predecessor Aaron Betsky as a man of many guises: critic, museum director, curator of the Venice Architecture Biennale, travelling salesman. On Friday May 9 Betsky fulfilled the last two roles with aplomb. After stops in Rome and Berlin he was in Rotterdam to reveal a little of the programme for the 11th Architecture Biennale, which opens in Venice in early September.
    ArchiNed.nl – news
Betsky’s presentation was lively and persuasive. His story started with a phone call from Mister Baratta. 'I’ve a problem. Can you help?,' Baratta asked. 'Maybe, but who are you?,' answered Betsky. Baratta turned out to be director of the Biennale di…

  • Neurath’s open-source urbanism
Stroom De Haag recently staged an exhibition on the work of Austrian economist, sociologist and philosopher Otto Neurath (1882-1945) entitled After Neurath – The Language of the Global Polis. Under the motto ‘better late than never’, here follows an introduction to the grandfather of open-sources.
    ArchiNed.nl – news
After Neurath is an event that seems to grow as spontaneously as the urban development envisaged by Neurath. For two years now – one year longer than planned – Stroom has been programming activities about this idealist. I visited the most recent exhi…

  • Revitalising Modernist Heritage
One hundred modernistic structures in the Netherlands were designated as monuments last year. But what should we do with this modern heritage? On December 15, 2007, the symposium Forward! On the Revitalisation of Modern Architecture took place at the SMART Project Space in Amsterdam. Major differences of opinion emerged between architects, theorists and artists on the significance and value of modernism. Artists in particular offered interesting suggestions for revitalising modernist heritage.
    ArchiNed.nl – news
It became clear during the symposium that each speaker not only interpreted modernism differently but also approached the revitalisation of heritage in a different way. For one speaker modernism was a movement linked the major socialist ideals, for a…
