  • View of the Road
The car windscreen offers a window on the world in 'World Avenue', the central exhibition of the Architecture Biennale Rotterdam. The main gallery of the NAi has been converted into a drive-in cinema for the occasion, with nine screens on rotating stages showing video footage of motorways in nine world cities.
    ArchiNed.nl – news
Parked in front of each screen in the exhibition is a model of the most commonly driven car in the city that features on that particular screen. Visitors sit into the cars and film footage transports them along roadways through the nine cities. From …

  • Architecture with a flavour
Last Monday Erick van Egeraat gave a lecture on landscape and architecture in Theater Het Oude Raadhuis in Hoofddorp. In attendance at the lecture, organised by the Podium for Architecture in the municipality of Haarlemmermeer, were both architects and others from outside the profession. Reason enough, therefore, for Erick van Egeraat to outline in somewhat populist yet certainly flamboyant style his views on architecture and landscape as a ‘big impact on a small scale’.
    ArchiNed.nl – news
Architecture with a flavour The first part of his lecture focused on what makes architecture 'good'. For Van Egeraat it is precisely the unnecessary accessories and decorative elements that give architecture its particular flavour, and that's the rea…

  • OMA two times winner
Rem Koolhaas' office OMA won the design competition for the extension of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. OMA's proposal consists in the demolishing of the pavilion-like buildings and replaces them with a vast structure. The second winning OMA design is for a theatre in Dallas.
    ArchiNed.nl – news
The LACMA is a complex of different buildings. In the last 36 years the museum gradually expanded with new buildings or additions to existing buildings. The architects' mandate was to transform the many buildings into a cohesive design. Besides Rem K…

  • A Genuine Greg Lynn in Amsterdam South-East?
Friday June 15 saw the opening of an exhibition of submissions to the limited competition for the honeycomb apartment building Kleiburg. Three artists and three architects were set the task of giving Kleiburg a facelift. Remarkably, the three artists turned out to have submitted typically architectural projects, and the architects produced art. American architect Greg Lynn (1964) made the best plan and will receive a further commission to translate his ideas into a feasible plan.
    ArchiNed.nl – news
Kleiburg is a typical Bijlmer block from the early 1970s with 500 rental dwellings on ten floors. The block is located in what is known as the Bijlmer Museum, where the blocks and surrounding space will preserve their original form and where the spir…

  • The architect as lubricant
Last October it was the turn of the Jon Jerde Partnership to spark a discussion about ‘power and architecture’ at the Berlage Institute. It was something of a home game for Jerde, the brains behind the Koopgoot shopping arcade in Rotterdam, whose spokesman David Rogers was able to voice his cynical view on the theme unchallenged.
    ArchiNed.nl – news
Jon Jerde and company can be considered the founding fathers of the type of shopping and leisure plaza sought after by every city that wants to compete against other cities in the global arena: large in scale, all-encompassing, spectacular, a mixture…

  • Lessons for Designers
What do architect Robert Venturi and photographer Stephen Shore have in common? Allard Jolles explains.
    ArchiNed.nl – news
Photos of different parts of the city always show the viewer something that cannot be seen 'in reality'. Firstly, that is because of the picture frame, which turns the photos into something of a window on or reflection of society. Then of course ther…

  • Rem's Junk in Mies' Space
It can’t have escaped anyone: the first major exhibition devoted to Rem Koolhaas and OMA/AMO is now on show in the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin. Big, plenty and perplexing. Rem Koolhaas lets loose.
    ArchiNed.nl – news
Content is an exhibition about Rem Koolhaas and, more precisely, by Rem Koolhaas, as is often the case with exhibitions devoted to living architects. The visitor is offered a glimpse inside the architect's office. How do OMA projects evolve? What fas…

  • IIT Campus Center by OMA opens
The McCormick Tribune Center, a campus building under the 'EI' next to the famous IIT buildings by Mies van der Rohe in Chicago, opened on Tuesday. After work in Los Angeles and for Prada, this is the first 'real' building by OMA in the USA.
    ArchiNed.nl – news
OMA received the commission after winning an international design competition in 1998. An important element of the design, and the reason it was probably chosen, is the 150-metre-long, stainless-steel, soundproof tube that encircles the elevated trai…

  • Neutra - Van der Leeuw House
The combination of a visionary client and sufficient funds to realise an architectonical ideal together with the right architect is rare, but crucial for the development and the acceptation of a new architecture. In the Netherlands the director of Van Nelle, C.H. van der Leeuw, is the most appealing example of a stimulating construction lord. Without his stimulating involvement in his contracts in the twenties and thirties for amongst others the famous Van Nelle factory and his own home located at the Rotterdam Kralingse Plas, the architects Leen van der Vlugt and with him the group of young architects of the New Building would have missed an important laboratory for their new architecture.
    ArchiNed.nl – news
Van der Leeuws role in the Dutch architecture may be well known, but it is not very wellknown that he has alse been active in America. In the thirties he financially supported Richard Neutra with the construction of his own home and office in Los Ang…
