IABR and NAI on the Future of the City
The main exhibition at the 4th International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam, Open City: Designing Coexistence, is the product of an intense collaboration between the IABR and the Netherlands Architecture Institute (NAI), and represents the heart of the 4th IABR. Both organizations are working together on the scheduling and organization of the Open City Event Program, a continuous program featuring lectures, film screenings, debates, presentations, workshops, conferences, and tours, which will be held at the NAI throughout the duration of the Biennale.
George Brugmans, Director of the IABR: “Architecture is about more than just architecture alone, and the IABR and the NAI see eye to eye when it comes to this important observation." The IABR and the NAI both emphasize the need for renewed political and social…

    Kees Christiaanse (curator)
The theme of the 4th International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam is the Open City, a city that is diverse, lively and socially sustainable, where people can productively relate to each other culturally, socially, as well as economically.
More specifically, with the theme Open City: Designing Coexistence, the 4th IABR raises the question of social cohesion in the city from the point of view of its designer: how can architects and urbanists make realistic contributions to the sustainable quality of the urban condition.
With three exhibitions, a unique collaboration with a public broadcaster and an extensive side program of lectures, film screenings, debates, workshops, an international master class and other events, the fourth edition of the International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam (IABR) embraces the theme of the Open City, a city that…

  • Euro Islam Architecture
As public debate on the best way to integrate Moslems in non-Islamic society grows more intense, the critical debate in architecture on the best way to stimulate integration through design is also becoming more heated. In his book Euro Islam Architecture: New Mosques of the Occident, Christian Welzbacher tries to elevate the discussion to a higher level.
    ArchiNed.nl – news
Put simply, some critics propagate a preference for modern-looking mosques without embellishments; cupolas and minarets are deemed superfluous because they are out of sync with the climate or technology of their new surroundings. The visibility of su…

  • Crisis of identity
Le Medi, a Mediterranean neighbourhood consisting of 93 dwellings in the Rotterdam district of Bospolder designed by Geurst & Schulze Architects, was completed this year.
    ArchiNed.nl – news
A visit to Le Medi made me ask myself the following question. What was the assignment that Woonbron Maasoevers housing association set for the architect to achieve this result? Or was it: Make a housing complex in a Mediterranean style that is more i…

  • Destination: Paradise
NAi director Ole Bouman introduced his predecessor Aaron Betsky as a man of many guises: critic, museum director, curator of the Venice Architecture Biennale, travelling salesman. On Friday May 9 Betsky fulfilled the last two roles with aplomb. After stops in Rome and Berlin he was in Rotterdam to reveal a little of the programme for the 11th Architecture Biennale, which opens in Venice in early September.
    ArchiNed.nl – news
Betsky’s presentation was lively and persuasive. His story started with a phone call from Mister Baratta. 'I’ve a problem. Can you help?,' Baratta asked. 'Maybe, but who are you?,' answered Betsky. Baratta turned out to be director of the Biennale di…

  • Call for liberation lacks motivation
On April 4, to mark the publication of Volume #14 – theme: 'Unsolicited Architecture' – the NAi organised a discussion about 'unsolicited architecture'. During the evening an emphatic moral appeal was made to architects.
    ArchiNed.nl – news
Precisely at a time when, according to the speakers, architecture is both successful and powerless, it offers no answers to important social questions. To turn the tide, architects were encouraged to liberate themselves from the straitjacket of tradi…

  • Urban Politics Now: Re-Imagining Democracy in the Neoliberal City
Psychoanalysis considers the Symptom – slips of the tongue, nervous ticks, dreams and suchlike – as a repressed form of speech; like a liar with sweaty palms, we’d rather keep something to ourselves, but just can’t help it. Symptoms are useful to the analyst, as an immediate surfacing of the Real, of the traumatic, uncontrollable issues that really motivate us – libido, the longing for recognition, fear of the Other, and so on. By carefully interpreting symptoms, the analyst can assess the pathology of a patient.
    ArchiNed.nl – news
These days it’s a commonplace to consider the design of our built environment in such pathological terms: The content of our cities is increasingly determined by apparently traumatic, uncontrollable motivations (including profitability, consumer dema…

  • The future of the old, sluggish discipline
The NAi organised a symposium on the future of architecture in association with Victor Veldhuijzen van Zanten on November 9, 2007. Architecture 2.0, The Destiny of Architecture was a marathon session of lectures by prominent architects. It was a gathering that contemplated the future by looking back at the past.
    ArchiNed.nl – news

A section of the Groninger Museum is devoted to the exhibition ‘P. Struycken: Digital Paradise’. Peter Struycken is present everywhere – in the exhibited work and in the interior. Famed for his way of working with colour, structure and form, the artist became interested in interdisciplinary collaboration at an early stage. In 1994 and 1999 he was commissioned by former director Frans Haks to design colour palettes for the interior of the new Groninger Museum building.
    ArchiNed.nl – news
After studying at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague from 1956 to 1961, Peter Struycken (1939) painted in a figurative style. He was fascinated by the differences and similarities in visual reality. A row of trees interested him more than a single…
