Upjohn was brought to the U.S. when he was one year old. When eighteen he entered his father's office, became his partner, and finally succeeded him. His chief work was the State Capitol in Hartford, Connecticut. He was elected a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects in 1857 and was a member of the New York Chapter, of which he served as president for two years.
