Spiering was a graduate of the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris and the University of Berlin. He was a member of the Society of Beaux-Arts Architects, the St. Louis Chapter of the American Institute of Architects, and was elected an Associate of the Institute in 1905. He was consulting architect for the Missouri State Capitol and designed many buildings in St. Louis, including the home of the Artists' Guild, of which he was a member.
