After graduation from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1890, Smith studied in the Atelier Paul Blondel in Paris. He practiced architecture from 1895 until his retirement in 1925. He was a member of the American Institute of Architects and a charter member of the Society of Beaux-Arts Architects.
