  • Exhibition Le Corbusier's Cabanon 1952/2006
    Detail Online – news
The «Cabanon«, a ‘primitive hut’ using rough pine boards on the exterior, it is set in a magnificent landscape where Le Corbusier was able to combine pleasure with concentrated work, now being shown at the ETH Zurich, Hönggerberg. Beginning in the 19…

  • Neurath’s open-source urbanism
Stroom De Haag recently staged an exhibition on the work of Austrian economist, sociologist and philosopher Otto Neurath (1882-1945) entitled After Neurath – The Language of the Global Polis. Under the motto ‘better late than never’, here follows an introduction to the grandfather of open-sources.
    ArchiNed.nl – news
After Neurath is an event that seems to grow as spontaneously as the urban development envisaged by Neurath. For two years now – one year longer than planned – Stroom has been programming activities about this idealist. I visited the most recent exhi…

  • Hi-Ha-Happening
Museum Night marked the opening of the installation/event Happening at the NAi. Is it back to the 1960s for the NAi? In one sense, perhaps. It’s certainly an attempt to break with the traditional exhibition. Activities, experiences and audience participation now set the tone.
    ArchiNed.nl – news
While 2007 was something of a transitional year that looked to the past with big, largely traditional exhibitions on Le Corbusier and Cuypers, the NAi is definitely looking to the future in 2008. In addition to the NAi’s institutional tasks of inform…

  • Revitalising Modernist Heritage
One hundred modernistic structures in the Netherlands were designated as monuments last year. But what should we do with this modern heritage? On December 15, 2007, the symposium Forward! On the Revitalisation of Modern Architecture took place at the SMART Project Space in Amsterdam. Major differences of opinion emerged between architects, theorists and artists on the significance and value of modernism. Artists in particular offered interesting suggestions for revitalising modernist heritage.
    ArchiNed.nl – news
It became clear during the symposium that each speaker not only interpreted modernism differently but also approached the revitalisation of heritage in a different way. For one speaker modernism was a movement linked the major socialist ideals, for a…

  • Who is Vedran Mimica?
From May 24 to June 10, Rotterdam will be the centre of the international architecture world, says Vedran Mimica. Who is Vedran Mimica? And what is his relation to the International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam? ArchiNed spoke to him.
    ArchiNed.nl – news
Born? In 1954 in Zagreb, then part of Yugoslavia. Study? I studied architecture at the University of Zagreb. Like so many young architects I entered competitions after graduation, among them a competition to design a monument for a young guerrilla fi…

  • MVRDV’s 3D Urban Design
What is the capacity of planet earth? How can we deal with climate change whilst retaining our quality of life? And what answers can we offer for increasingly pressing spatial problems? Containing an impressive amount of data, the recently published thick volume KM3 by MVRDV presents a number of projects that pave the way for a solution in the form of an imaginary three-dimensional city called KM3.
    ArchiNed.nl – news
KM3 Excursions on Capacity is intended as a follow-up to FARMAX, the book released in 1998 and now sold out. A second-hand copy of the first edition now fetches hundreds of euro on the internet. FARMAX explored the possibilities of living in extremel…

  • Candilis-Josic-Woods: dialectic of modernity
According to George Candilis, Alexis Josic and Shadrach Woods, building for the masses was the primary function of architecture and urban design. They believed that humanism and regionalism were the two main concepts. Tom Avermaete wrote a thesis on the design philosophy and work of the three.
    ArchiNed.nl – news
'And if there are no more cities, we return to savagery.' This is one of the two quotes from Shadrach Woods with which Tom Avermaete begins his book. It's a quote that rings differently in the weeks after the unrest in French suburbs. Certainly for t…

  • Team 10: (In Search of) A Utopia of the Present
Myths, tall stories, tales of adventure: no shortage of them when it comes to Team 10. But fact and fiction are pulled apart in the recently issued book 'Team 10, 1953-81, In Search of a Utopia of the Present', on the new website Team10-Online, and in the major exhibition now on show at the NAi.
    ArchiNed.nl – news
'Team 10 grew out of criticism within CIAM, as an irritating grain in an oyster', said Aldo van Eyck in 1991. Criticism was directed against what critics saw as the extreme functionalism of Le Corbusier, whom Team 10 members believed wanted to create…

  • Tune in & Turn on
Is Luc Deleu a realist, idealist or visionary? To be honest, it's a question I'd prefer not to answer. After seeing the exhibition Values in Antwerp's MUHKA, I'm occupied by just one question. What purpose is served by the work of Luc 'Self-Power Man' Deleu, the self-appointed orbanist?
    ArchiNed.nl – news
Orbanism is the open concept employed by Luc Deleu. »Orbanism stands for a metaphysical and material structuring of the world for the common good, the public interest. Orbanism aims for a dynamic balance between order and chaos, architecture and life…

  • Tati at the Nai
Think of Tati and the film Mon Oncle springs to mind, and think of that film and Villa Arpel will appear, the show-box home of Monsieur Arpel. The exhibition Tatirama at the NAi looks at the role of architecture in the films of French filmmaker Jacques Tati.
    ArchiNed.nl – news
With films like Mon Oncle (1958) and Playtime (1967), Jacques Tati (1907-1982) made a significant contribution to that small but celebrated group of films in which architecture plays a prominent role; other leading works are Metropolis (1927) by Frit…

  • The Giant Gets Ready
After the earlier press offensives 'The Giant Awakens' and 'The Giant Stands Up' (the Giant in question being the Haarlemmermeer), on May 17 it was the turn of 'The Giant Gets Ready'. On the basis of a cool 1000 dwelling units at a density of 30-35 units per hectare and The Ten Commandments for Vinex-Free Building, the architecture firms - Soeters Van Eldonk Ponec, MVRDV, Erick van Egeraat Associates and Steven Holl - were given two months to come up with designs for the Toolenburg South area. Fedde Reeskamp attended the presentation.
    ArchiNed.nl – news
All five City-Scrapers had half an hour to present their vision for the plan area, which was followed by a tough third degree interrogation by the Inspector Columbo of building, Gerrit Middelkoop. The aim: to realise something akin to a world exposit…

  • 25 years of Oase
Architecture journal Oase celebrated its 25th birthday with a special issue entitled 25 Years of Critical Reflection on Architecture and a debate of the same name on a sunny Tuesday afternoon in the NAi lecture theatre.
    ArchiNed.nl – news
The party invitation stated that the afternoon would examine the potential influence of architecture journals on the architecture debate and climate. It would look for answers to questions about the relation between developments in practice and perio…

  • Greg Lynn recites from his own work
Architects like to plan their use of time systematically. Le Corbusier divided his day into three parts - for painting, architecture and urban planning. Greg Lynn devotes 30% of his time to teaching, 30% to commercial commissions and 30% to research. No doubt it was during the remaining 10% that he wrote the sci-fi story he recited at the Berlage Institute. Jeroen Mensink reports.
    ArchiNed.nl – news
Building ProcessThough even his complex forms cause many a mouth to drop open in wonderment, Greg Lynn's design method is every bit as interesting as the end result. In recent years, however, his pioneering work has shifted emphasis - spurred no doub…
